REVIEW: Love prevails in ‘Taos Pusong Nagmamahal, Rosie’

Set in the flower-filled Davino Apartment, Taos Pusong Nagmamahal, Rosie shows that love does not only persevere through mere romances, but also in the surrounding community that we find ourselves in.

The play, produced by Lyceum of the Philippines University’s theatre organization Tanghalang Batingaw, tells the Filipino experience through various vignettes.

Empathetic and energetic cast

Acting similarly to an anthology, the 1hr 45m play shows Rosie’s narration of the events that shape the people in the Davino Apartment. Angel An is believably empathetic as the warm-hearted Rosie.

Through Rosie’s recollections, the play becomes alive. Its lively cast elicits laughter with the effective amusement they provide. Much of the play succeeds with this cast, whose harmonious relationships with each other elevate the play into something bursting with so much life.

Lived-in production

Denzhelberg Razal deserves a high amount of praise for their set design, which is wholly reminiscent of a middle-class Filipino home. Down to the Stick-O containers and graduation photos adorned with medals, Razal succeeds in his lived-in construction of the Davino Apartment.

Yet while the script of Elmo Lozada is largely commendable for its tackling of the Filipino experience, which is marked by specific events such as relocating to Metro Manila for better opportunities, some scenes went on longer than it should have been. Nonetheless, the material is there, and it has strong potential.

Direction from Rowell Camat and Jasmine Tabuena ensured the viewing experience was never boring, but more restraint could have been had in regards to the duration of Rosie’s recollections.

Love prevails

Taos Pusong Nagmamahal, Rosie is a loving tribute to the people who help us persevere in life.

And despite everything else, our love for one another will always prevail.
