The Ateneo Blue Repertory is concluding its 33rd season with the high-energy, Tony-nominated Legally Blonde.
Opting for an open rehearsal wherein all performers wore the standard black, and had a stuffed toy for Paulette’s dog, rather than a traditional dress run, we got the rare opportunity to observe the strenuous efforts needed to match the ambition of Elle Woods.
The rehearsal unfolded as a bare bones run-through of the first act, with monobloc chairs all over the floor of the MVP Roofdeck. Obviously, without the polish of full sets, striking lights, and Pinterest-worthy costumes, the cast had to sell the musical with only their voices.
Just like Elle Woods and her application for Harvard Law, this rehearsal had a clear vision of what it wanted to achieve and an abundance of enthusiasm to match. Being true to yourself never goes out of style, indeed.
Preview of Pink Perfection
The performers did a tremendous job in bringing this humorous show to life. Even in a minimalist rehearsal, their overall energy was infectious and undeniable. The stamina of the ensemble is also nothing to sneeze at with their constant dashes from here to there. Its captivating choreography, while still being polished, is also already a great combination of whimsy and style.
Leading lady Elle Woods was played by LJ Bala in this rehearsal. Bala’s portrayal hints at an exceptional performance in the full production. From what was seen in the rehearsal, Bala already carries the blend of charm, determination, and vulnerability that makes Elle the cool feminist icon she is. We can only imagine how Bala would fare once she is already equipped with the signature, eye-catchingly stunning pink wardrobe.
Gel Basa, as Elle’s confidant Paulette, shines the brightest. Her comedic timing was spectacular, her ability to get the audience clapping and cheering for her even more so. A particular moment that stands out is when Basa playfully attempts to throw a stuffed dog toy to the audience, which elicited further glee from the audience.
Taking Center Stage This May!

With a month and a half’s worth of rehearsals left, Ateneo Blue Repertory looks poised to Bend & Snap the musical into a fabulous and empowering ten-show run in May 2025. If this open rehearsal was any indicator, audiences should prepare for a musical experience that is pink, powerful, and positively Elle Woods-approved.
