Continuing its celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will hold its fifth centennial concert.

The concert is centered on Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas and the world premiere of ‘Pasasalamat‘ for choir and orchestra, a new work by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayayab.

Program

Cayabyab’s work ‘Pasasalamat‘ will be accompanied with text by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario and performed under the musical direction of MSO Principal Conductor Maestro Marlon Chen.

Commissioned by the MSO for its centennial, ‘Pasasalamat‘ reflects on the meaning of gratitude as a personal feeling and as a responsibility. The work serves to prompt reflection on the responsibilities befitting the institution’s long-standing existence and impact on Philippine music.

Almario’s text will be brought to life by the Bagong Himig Serenata, the chorale group of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. They will also serve as the featured choir of the MSO.

Known for her expressive performances and technical artistry, Thomas will perform ‘Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33’ by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Bringing the night to a quiet and reflective close is ‘Requiem, Op. 48’ by French composer Gabriel Fauré. The piece will be performed with the MSO and the PUP Bagong Himig Serenata. Filipino baritenor Ruzzel Clemeno will serve as baritone soloist with Filipino soprano Angeli Benipayo also serving as soprano soloist.
